Daddy, Mommy, and Baby
As I've interacted with the baby delivery industry--mainly nurses doing exams, explaining breast feeding technique, etc -- I've noticed that they refer to me, Theresa, and our heretofore unnamed offspring as "Daddy", "Mommy", and "Baby". Not "the father", "the baby's dad", "Ed", "you with the big belly". I assume that there's a convenience in not having to know people's names. You can just assume that the doting fellow is the father.
I confess that it's kind of endearing to be reminded that, well, I'm going to be a father. There's also an implicit but assured undercurrent of approval.
Another interesting side-effect is that this is an introduction to referring to your spouse as "Mommy" or "Daddy". A co-worker pointed that out to me. I wonder when T and I will adopt that. I suppose once our baby knows the word. What an interesting transition to make. To call your wife, "Mommy", is to consider her a mother. More than just a wife.
Ah, how we grow!
